About Us
Our Story
Like most others I only had a passing interest in saving the planet.
It was stating the blindingly obvious, “of course I’m interested” but just like most others I would leave it to someone else to do something about it.
It all began with my little niece growing up with chronic eczema, plagued with scratching and eventually open wounds she suffered badly, especially at night time.
Because she couldn’t use commercial soap I started to investigate the causes and treatments and found that goats milk provided a good base to start, and my early attempts were more akin to witchcraft than soapmaking.
During the search it became a Damascene moment for me, finding all the chemicals that are being used in industrial processes and packaging, and having nowhere to go. When the lightbulb goes on and you realise that most of this is unnecessary, what a rush!.
The world can’t expect everyone to become an eco warrior and not every business can, overnight, stop using things that pollute. We can’t all have multiple bins and bags around the house to seperate things in. All we can do is think and try a little harder. Don’t set yourself targets that are unsustainable, just remember marginal gains. If you have a bottle of wine every night and this week you recycle just one of those bottles it is 15% better than you did last week.
Find a little inspiration as I did when I found my local dive club saving this little fellow from plastic waste.
An alternative to recycling is not to buy products that do damage in the first place.
At Harbour Soap our aim is we don’t use or sell anything that does damage, all our products are recyclable or bio-degradable
And people, when you are sitting at the traffic lights throw out an apple core but not your Mcdonalds wrappers.
The Alembic Still
Our new Alembic Still
In an effort to provide fidelity of product we are experimenting with our own distillations.
But the integrity has first of all to be established, we will update on progress.
Stills have been in use since I don’t know when, unfortunately in the UK it was for alcohol.
Let’s hope ours doesn’t go the same way
…………… or then again
